The Importance of Cybersecurity in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)

In 2021, Indonesia faced over 1.6 billion cyber crimes from criminals who want information, financial gain, or even just the disruption of an organization. The continued development and improvement of computer technology throughout the 21st century has vastly increased the speed and efficiency of the business operations and their production line, especially in the visibility solution field. However, the continued advancements of technology also pushes forward the advancements of cybercrime or cyberwarfare. 

In this article, we will discover what is cybercrime, cyberwarfare, and cybersecurity, as well as its importance for companies (especially in the operational technology field) to protect themselves, their company data, finances, and employees from the extreme threat of cyber crimes.

Definition of Cybercrime and Cyber Warfare

Cybercrime is defined as a crime that involves a computer and a network that may harm someone's security and financial health. (Moore, 2005)

Cyberwarfare is defined as the use of computer technology to disrupt the activities of a state or organization, especially the deliberate attacking of information systems for strategic or military purposes. (Singer and Friedman, 2014).

How Cybercrimes Affect Organizations

These attempts by criminals to harm the system through incriminating activities poses a risk for all organizations. The improvements in technology pushes many cybercriminals to become stronger with the aim of taking advantage of companies with outdated technology or security systems. Otherwise, criminals also initiate cybercrime to either rob, take ransom of hardware/software, or even just disrupt the company’s day-to-day operations. 

As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0, we must know how to defend ourselves from any criminal (may it be  a cybercriminal or the average petty thief) at all costs, to ensure the safety and security of company information, finances, and the lives of all employees through the effective use of cybersecurity.

Definition of Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is defined as the protection of computer systems and networks from information disclosure, theft of, or damage to their hardware, software, or electronic data, as well as from the disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. (Schatz, Bashroush, and Wall, 2017).

The Overall Importance of Cybersecurity

As seen from its definition, cybersecurity acts as the barrier to which criminals need to pass through to gain access to an organization’s information, finances, or operations. Cybersecurity can be seen in many forms, which includes the basic passcode to a computer’s admin profile to the antivirus that prevents any sort of malware from entering the system. The stronger the walls of security, the harder it will take for criminals to breach the layer of protection. This means improving, updating, and ensuring cybersecurity software competency is the key to properly defending your organization’s hardware, software, and even operational equipment from being trespassed by unauthorized individuals.
